About the Project:

SIF provided investment of over £3m to the Pitches project for three capital regeneration schemes within Derry City and Strabane District Council area. The overarching aim was to enhance the sporting facilities available to support people into active and healthy activities through provision of play, leisure and health and wellbeing options. The project included increasing community services through the provision of new grass/turf pitch surfaces, the upgrade of existing playing surfaces to 3G and the provision of ancillary pavilion buildings, lighting and fencing in three locations within Derry City, specifically Leafair, Brandywell and Corrody Road.   The objectives for each of the three elements of the project are detailed below;

  • Leafair – Redevelopment of the current changing facilities into a new Pavilion incorporating changing facilities and community rooms.  The project included a 3-storey changing and community pavilion comprising changing rooms on the ground floor; administration and meeting rooms on the first floor and multi-purpose function rooms and meeting rooms on the second floor;
  • Brandywell – To contribute to Phase 1 of the redevelopment of the Brandywell Stadium to include replacement and upgrade of the existing turf grass playing surface at the showground soccer pitch to a new 3G pitch surface with floodlighting, fencing and associated site ancillary works; and
  • Corrody Road – Development of a new full size turf GAA playing pitch, with drainage, floodlighting and fencing.

The project targeted in particular deprived areas of Derry City and placed particular emphasis on delivering on the aims and objectives of Derry Council’s Outdoor Playing Pitch Strategy.

Progress to date:

The project has completed construction and is operational.  The improvement works undertaken as part of the project have provided three much needed, enhanced, leisure and recreation facilities which will contribute to the overall community development and redevelopment infrastructure of Derry City and Strabane District Council and to the improved health and lifestyles of people in the local communities and help build a strong community spirit.

Impacts:

Monitoring and evaluation of all Social Investment Fund projects is carried out using “Outcomes Based Accountability” (OBA). Where SIF has funded capital works, the project provides quarterly “post-capital” data for a period of 3 years which details the positive impacts enabled by the capital works undertaken. The Pitches project has completed one element of its 3 years of post capital monitoring. Below are the final capital infographic for all three elements and the post capital infographic for the Brandywell element which highlight the key impacts of the project.  OBA data collection is ongoing for their post capital infographic for the other two elements.
