Reports of Decisions taken by Northern Ireland Departments

On 5 November 2018 the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, in accordance with section 3(2) of the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation and Exercise of Functions) Act 2018, published guidance about the exercise of the functions of Northern Ireland departments during the period for Executive Formation.

This guidance requires Northern Ireland departments to prepare a monthly summary report of decisions taken by senior officials using the guidance and to share this with the Secretary of State, who will in turn promptly make it available to Parliament and to the Northern Ireland political parties.

The Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act 2022 (“the EF Act”) received Royal Assent on 6 December 2022.  The EF Act was subsequently amended by the Northern Ireland (Interim Arrangements) Act 2023 (NIIAA).  In accordance with s3(4) of the EF Act, the Secretary of State has published guidance (“the Guidance”) about the exercise of departmental functions by senior officers of Northern Ireland departments during the absence of Ministers.  The Guidance requires a monthly summary report to be provided to the Secretary of State, which will be shared with Parliament and the Northern Ireland political parties, detailing the decisions taken using the guidance.

The Summary Reports below provides information on the decisions taken by Northern Ireland departments in 2018/19 and 2022/23.
