The Executive Office has announced the return of the prestigious All Ireland Pipe Band Championships to Derry~Londonderry in 2025, marking a significant event for the region's cultural and tourism calendar.

Last hosted during the successful 2013 UK City of Culture celebrations, the Championships are expected to draw thousands of visitors to the city, providing a major boost for local businesses and tourism.

The Championships are an opportunity to showcase Ebrington to a broader and more diverse audience, raising the profile of the site and demonstrating its potential to contribute to economic growth, cultural engagement and long-term sustainability for the region.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill emphasised the strategic importance of the site. She said:

“Unlocking the full potential of Ebrington Square is a priority for The Executive Office. That includes bringing major events such as the All Ireland Pipe Band Championships to the city.

“We continue to work with the council and others to develop a vibrant and inclusive events programme for Ebrington.”

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said:

“This represents a major vote of confidence in Ebrington as a place that can host world class events. Building on the city’s rich musical culture and history, this will be a celebration for all ages to enjoy.”

Welcoming the announcement, Alastair Patterson, Chairman of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association Northern Ireland Branch said:

“We are delighted to be bringing the All Ireland Pipe Band and Drum Majors Championships to Ebrington Square, Derry / Londonderry.

“The All Ireland Championships is jointly run between RSPBANI and the IPBA and was last in the city in 2013 and we are absolutely thrilled and delighted to be bringing this Major Championship, which will showcase the best Pipe Bands and Drum Majors from throughout Ireland and further afield, here to the North West.

“I want to thank The Executive Office for getting involved and look forward to working closely with them, and also Derry City and Strabane District Council, and promise an excellent experience on the 5th July 2025 on the Square.”
