  • Attorney General to leave post at end of June

    The term of office of Mr John Larkin QC as Attorney General for Northern Ireland will cease at the end of this month.

    John Larkin QC has been the chief legal adviser to the Executive for the past 10 years and will leave office on June 30.

    Thanking Mr Larkin QC for his service as Attorney General, First Minister Arlene Foster and deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “On behalf of the Executive, we would like to thank Mr Larkin for his tireless and invaluable work over the past decade. The Executive Office will initiate a selection process to help identify and appoint Mr Larkin’s successor. This process will be based on the principles that apply to public appointments and will be an open competition.”

    A number of options for interim arrangements to fill the position of the Attorney General are currently being considered.

    Notes to editors:

    1. The post of Attorney General for Northern Ireland was established following the devolution of justice responsibilities on 12 April 2010 and the enactment of the Justice (Northern Ireland) Act 2002.
    2. John Larkin QC was appointed Attorney General for Northern Ireland in May 2010. His current term of office will cease on 30 June 2020.
