Deputy First Minister attends Farnborough International Airshow to support local companies

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly attended the Farnborough International Airshow yesterday to meet companies from NI who are exhibiting there and hear about the important role the local aerospace sector plays on the world stage.
She met with representatives from 11 companies from across all areas within the wider aerospace sector in NI and held a series of meetings with Boeing, Spirit and Airbus to discuss how best to support the sector in NI.
The deputy First Minister also presented awards in recognition of supply chain excellence at a special reception during the prestigious event.
Speaking at the show, the deputy First Minister said the local aerospace sector has a significant role to play when it comes to growing our economy, attracting investment, harnessing innovation and keeping us safe.
She said:
“Since taking up office, we have had the honour of showcasing why Northern Ireland is such an incredible place to live, work, invest, study and visit.
“And yesterday’s event highlights why we are also recognised as global leaders in aerospace technology, making a significant contribution on the world stage.
“The sector provides revenues of around £2billion, employing around 7,000 people directly and many others in the supply chain.
The deputy First Minister also met Dr Rosemary Coogan, Northern Ireland’s first astronaut, at the event.
She added:
“It was fantastic to meet with Dr Coogan and hear more about the hard work and dedication required to earn her astronaut wings. She is a great ambassador for Northern Ireland and I wished her well on behalf of everyone as she continues with her rigorous training and preparations for future missions to space.”
