The Ministers also thanked Bombardier for their positive influence on Shorts during its 31 year ownership of the company.

First Minister Arlene Foster said: “The finalisation of this sale today is positive news, bringing a level of certainty and much needed optimism to workers and the broader community.

“Shorts is an important part of the fabric of Northern Ireland. It has an exceptional workforce and a proud history of innovation and drive. With a strong presence across the world, Shorts has helped to transform Northern Ireland Aerospace into a recognised brand.

“We warmly welcome Spirit to Northern Ireland and, under their ownership, look forward to seeing Shorts go from strength to strength. I also want to thank Bombardier for its 31 year commitment and investment.”

Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “Shorts has been a significant employer and contributor to our economy for decades. The sale of the company today secures its place in the Aerospace sector locally and internationally.

“We know this has been a difficult time for those who depend on Shorts for their livelihoods. I hope that this news will provide some comfort and security for workers and their families.

“Spirit has no doubt recognised the value of our skilled workforce and high performing Aerospace sector. Their acquisition of Shorts offers a real opportunity to bring new life into the business and the wider sector and I wish them every success for the future.”

Economy Minister Diane Dodds said: “Today is a major development in Northern Ireland, given the significance of Shorts, as one of our region’s oldest companies, a major employer and economic driver. The Aerospace sector has been, and remains, a high priority sector for Northern Ireland.

"The industry has built up valuable skills and capabilities over decades and it is vital that this knowhow is preserved. As we look forward to a new era for Shorts under the ownership of Spirit, I am very confident that the legacy being left by Bombardier provides a solid foundation for the future.”
